The exhibit features watercolors by Linda Abbey, oil paintings by Diane Menzies, mixed media drawings by Fred and Laura J. Wellner, and "Dance Themes: Pas de Deux," art by Judith Hand and Christine Patsos.

Linda Abbey uses the transparency and freshness of the watercolor medium itself to depict flowers and scenes from Venice, Italy. For this exhibit Linda will also be showing works in oil from a series of 40 small birch panels depicting Onondaga Park in Syracuse.

Diane Menzies has a strong passion for the natural world as is depicted in many of her oil paintings. The "North Lake Series" emerges from the Adirondack Mountains. They portray a reverence for this ancient place of deep waters and quietude of woods.

Fred Wellner creates surreal landscapes and abstractions using pencil, charcoal and watercolor. Fred states, "There is this paradoxical dance of order and chaos, suggesting that life cannot be entirely either and therefore must embrace both. When I apply pencil or brush, this resonates in my thoughts, much more so when I'm unfettered by precision, when working on surreal or abstract images."

Laura J. Wellner creates landscapes and abstractions inspired by nature using pencil, watercolor and pastel. Her drawings reflect the intricate wonders of a flower, the pearly surface of a shell, the ruffles of lichen on bark, rocks in water, clouds in sky, and then there are visualizations of music -- Beethoven mostly.

Judith Hand and Christine Patsos are exhibiting art about dance in their collaborative show titled "Dance Themes: Pas de Deux." Judith Hand's watercolors depict the basic positions in ballet. Her images are almost monochromatic paintings with different backgrounds accompanying manikins arranged in each ballet position. Christine Patsos uses pencil and watercolor wash or acrylic stain on Bristol board to portray ballet dancers.

Miriam Beerman: Eloquent Pain(t) surveys the intense paintings created by the artist since her 1990 retrospective held at the New Jersey State Museum. Many of Beerman's paintings are inspired by traumatic and agonizing historical events. Eloquent Pain(t) will highlight how poetry has been a consistent element of inspiration in the artist's later works. After opening at the Everson, the exhibition will travel to the Queensborough Art Gallery.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Professional Photographers' Society of Central New York and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, Syracuse Regional Office. This is the second Heart Gallery exhibition in Central New York since 2004. Forty photographers donated their time and talents to create unique portraits of 53 children in foster care that are in need of a family. The Heart Gallery exhibition hopes to find adoptive families for the children participating, as well as to raise awareness around the need for foster and adoptive families here in Central New York and across the state.

African-American Constructs: Designs by Scott Ruff

Ruff is a professor of architecture at Syracuse University. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Cornell University. He is the recipient of an Alpha Chi Ro Medal for leadership and service. Prior to joining the SU faculty, Ruff taught at Hampton University, the University at Buffalo and Cornell University. Ruff previously worked with the architectural firm of Foit-Albert and Associates.

Ruff formed Ruff Works Studio in 2003. Ruff Works specializes in research and design. One main focus of the studio is the research and cultivation of African-American aesthetics in spatial design. Ruff's publications include an article in Thresholds, "Spatial wRapping: A Speculation on Men's Hip-Hop Fashion," and a book review in the Journal of Architectural Education, "White Papers, Black Marks." He has lectured throughout the United States.

Over 40 visual artists in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts are participating in the annual exhibition highlighting new work by the college's faculty. This year, for the first time, the exhibition has been organized on the theme of challenges chosen, faced, discovered and resolved by this diverse group of image and object makers.

As usual the show brings together a broad diversity of media, technique and inspiration. Visitors will be surprised by the range of objects on display and their breadth and depth of intellectual and emotional content. Traditional themes like portraiture, landscape and still life can be seen next to more experimental genres such as interactive installations and time based arts.

Making this exhibition especially interesting are the visual comparisons between artists working in the same subject area. Several artists are intrigued by landscape but their inspiration springs from sources as different as gardening, the subtle yet real transitions that occur in a landscape and discovering visually interesting fragments of urban settings. Other artists found life experience to inspire them: one used her experiences as a pediatric nurse to shape her imagery while another attempted to portray the music of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis through abstract drawings. Yet another used his family as subjects in a series of photographs that documented the family's travails.

In David Feldman's bittersweet drama, not only is the State Fair Cafe in danger of going out of business, but the cook falls for a waitress who finds it impossible to to remain faithful to one man for more than a week, and an abandoned orphan mysteriously disappears.

"We did a reading of an earlier version of this play about a year and a half ago," Feldman said. "It's gone through several revisions since then, including two workshops at New York's Ensemble Studio Theatre," one of them with Klonsky and Schwartz author Romulus Linney. "It's an entirely different play now."

Feldman currently teaches in the Syracuse University Drama Department and is the founder and artistic director of Armory Square Playhouse.

The script-in-hand reading will be followed by a discussion with the author, directed by ASP Production Coordinator Len Fonte.

On display will be material from the recently processed Grace Hartigan Papers, as well as from the University Art Collection, the Grove Press Archives, and SCRC's extensive holdings of art and literary magazines from the 1950s. Grace Hartigan (1922*) was a major participant in the explosion of creative energy that was the New York artistic and literary scene of the early 1950s. An important abstract expressionist painter, Hartigan was included in the famous show Twelve Americans at the Museum of Modern Art in 1956. Her friends and correspondents included Frank O'Hara, Larry Rivers, Barbara Guest, and Joan Mitchell.

The exhibition is part of the Syracuse Symposium, which for 2006/2007 has chosen imagination as its theme.

The images in the exhibition, taken mostly in the Syracuse area, are digitally distorted and manipulated to represent the way that people's vision can become altered by outside pressures and influences such as consumerism, religion, government, education, and sports. One of the main themes behind Pinkcombe's work is identity -- he is particularly interested in how outside influences affect who people are. In some photographs he looks at racial identity through images of borders, bridges, and traffic stops, which link communities and also symbolize immigration and emigration. He also creates what he calls "theater images," where the photographs are manipulated and stripped of so much information that they begin to look like film sets or models.

Pinkcombe currently lives in London, England. He attended school at Blackpool College of Lancaster University. Recent exhibition venues include the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in Greenwich and the 921 Gallery in Hackney, Great Britain. Originally trained as a commercial photographer, Pinkcombe shifted to art photography after a prolonged battle with leukemia made him reevaluate his life. He participated in Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program in March 2005. Pinkcombe's residency was sponsored by Autograph: The Association of Black Photographers located in London.

Since Liliana Porter last presented her prints and paintings at Syracuse University (Crossing Boundaries, 1990), this world-renowned Argentinean artist has continued to explore and grow into new dimensions in photography and installation art. Her figurines and toys, her characters, are social, down to earth human creations, made in society's image and likeness.

Born in Uruguay, Ana Tiscornia was a witness-participant of Latin America's recent painful history. Her world is made out of digitalized photography intermingled with maps, fragmented objects, rolled pieces of paper, leftovers -- what we recall are broken sequences, broken at some critical point in our imagery, in our memory.

About the nature of this exhibit, the artists comment: "In order to say where our work intercepts, first we should establish that both artworks are different. While one is more philosophical, related to recurrent questions (Liliana), the other is more political and relates to current events (Ana). While one is dramatic, the other confronts human tragedy with humor. We do not pretend to erase that diversity but to use it as material for the new constructions. What we want is for the fusion of both languages to give birth to a narrative that could be for all intents and purposes fictional and mysterious, where the visual ambiguity opens new ways of interpretation and uncovers unexpected conflicts."

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Professional Photographers' Society of Central New York and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, Syracuse Regional Office. This is the second Heart Gallery exhibition in Central New York since 2004. Forty photographers donated their time and talents to create unique portraits of 53 children in foster care that are in need of a family. The Heart Gallery exhibition hopes to find adoptive families for the children participating, as well as to raise awareness around the need for foster and adoptive families here in Central New York and across the state.

Ruff is a professor of architecture at Syracuse University. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Cornell University. He is the recipient of an Alpha Chi Ro Medal for leadership and service. Prior to joining the SU faculty, Ruff taught at Hampton University, the University at Buffalo and Cornell University. Ruff previously worked with the architectural firm of Foit-Albert and Associates.

Ruff formed Ruff Works Studio in 2003. Ruff Works specializes in research and design. One main focus of the studio is the research and cultivation of African-American aesthetics in spatial design. Ruff's publications include an article in Thresholds, "Spatial wRapping: A Speculation on Men's Hip-Hop Fashion," and a book review in the Journal of Architectural Education, "White Papers, Black Marks." He has lectured throughout the United States.

The images in the exhibition, taken mostly in the Syracuse area, are digitally distorted and manipulated to represent the way that people's vision can become altered by outside pressures and influences such as consumerism, religion, government, education, and sports. One of the main themes behind Pinkcombe's work is identity -- he is particularly interested in how outside influences affect who people are. In some photographs he looks at racial identity through images of borders, bridges, and traffic stops, which link communities and also symbolize immigration and emigration. He also creates what he calls "theater images," where the photographs are manipulated and stripped of so much information that they begin to look like film sets or models.

Pinkcombe currently lives in London, England. He attended school at Blackpool College of Lancaster University. Recent exhibition venues include the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in Greenwich and the 921 Gallery in Hackney, Great Britain. Originally trained as a commercial photographer, Pinkcombe shifted to art photography after a prolonged battle with leukemia made him reevaluate his life. He participated in Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program in March 2005. Pinkcombe's residency was sponsored by Autograph: The Association of Black Photographers located in London.

Over 40 visual artists in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts are participating in the annual exhibition highlighting new work by the college's faculty. This year, for the first time, the exhibition has been organized on the theme of challenges chosen, faced, discovered and resolved by this diverse group of image and object makers.

As usual the show brings together a broad diversity of media, technique and inspiration. Visitors will be surprised by the range of objects on display and their breadth and depth of intellectual and emotional content. Traditional themes like portraiture, landscape and still life can be seen next to more experimental genres such as interactive installations and time based arts.

Making this exhibition especially interesting are the visual comparisons between artists working in the same subject area. Several artists are intrigued by landscape but their inspiration springs from sources as different as gardening, the subtle yet real transitions that occur in a landscape and discovering visually interesting fragments of urban settings. Other artists found life experience to inspire them: one used her experiences as a pediatric nurse to shape her imagery while another attempted to portray the music of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis through abstract drawings. Yet another used his family as subjects in a series of photographs that documented the family's travails.

Since Liliana Porter last presented her prints and paintings at Syracuse University (Crossing Boundaries, 1990), this world-renowned Argentinean artist has continued to explore and grow into new dimensions in photography and installation art. Her figurines and toys, her characters, are social, down to earth human creations, made in society's image and likeness.

Born in Uruguay, Ana Tiscornia was a witness-participant of Latin America's recent painful history. Her world is made out of digitalized photography intermingled with maps, fragmented objects, rolled pieces of paper, leftovers -- what we recall are broken sequences, broken at some critical point in our imagery, in our memory.

About the nature of this exhibit, the artists comment: "In order to say where our work intercepts, first we should establish that both artworks are different. While one is more philosophical, related to recurrent questions (Liliana), the other is more political and relates to current events (Ana). While one is dramatic, the other confronts human tragedy with humor. We do not pretend to erase that diversity but to use it as material for the new constructions. What we want is for the fusion of both languages to give birth to a narrative that could be for all intents and purposes fictional and mysterious, where the visual ambiguity opens new ways of interpretation and uncovers unexpected conflicts."

On display will be material from the recently processed Grace Hartigan Papers, as well as from the University Art Collection, the Grove Press Archives, and SCRC's extensive holdings of art and literary magazines from the 1950s. Grace Hartigan (1922*) was a major participant in the explosion of creative energy that was the New York artistic and literary scene of the early 1950s. An important abstract expressionist painter, Hartigan was included in the famous show Twelve Americans at the Museum of Modern Art in 1956. Her friends and correspondents included Frank O'Hara, Larry Rivers, Barbara Guest, and Joan Mitchell.

The exhibition is part of the Syracuse Symposium, which for 2006/2007 has chosen imagination as its theme.

The Rap Canterbury Tales

The Rap Canterbury Tales resurrects English poet Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th century masterpiece The Canterbury Tales in the form of a lyrical battle. The Pardoner, The Miller, The Wife of Bath, and Chaucer himself all compete for the storytelling crown. The presentation includes a comparison of Chaucer's narrative techniques and poetic form with the narrative techniques and practices of contemporary hip-hop culture. Baba Brinkman's version is set in the 21st century urban United States, as a group of rappers battle for the best rap while touring.

Brinkman began his rap career at age 19, free styling and writing songs in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada. During his development as a rapper, he also completed a bachelor's degree at Simon Fraser University and master's degree in Medieval and Renaissance English literature at the University of Victoria. His thesis drew parallels between the worlds of rap music and literary poetry.

In summer 2004, Brinkman took The Rap Canterbury Tales on a tour of seven cities around the world, including Prague, Montreal, Edinburgh and San Francisco. He completed the album version in fall 2004. In spring 2005, Cambridge University sponsored a school tour across England, where Brinkman performed for more than 1,600 students in more than 30 schools. Since 2004, he has toured The Rap Canterbury Tales in Australia and the United Kingdom. The Rap Canterbury Tales has also been published as an illustrated paperback by Vancouver's Talon Books.

Rookery Nook is set in 1926 and centers on Gerald Popkiss, a recently married playboy who suddenly finds himself traveling alone when his new wife, Clara, is waylaid by her mother's sudden illness. When Gerald arrives in Rookery Nook, his philandering instincts kick in when he happens upon a pretty young girl dressed only in pink pajamas who has been thrown out of the house next door to his. Hilarity ensues when Gerald struggles to properly outfit the girl and keep her hidden from his sister-in-law, Gertrude, and nosy maid, Mrs. Leverett. Hailed as the "Master of the Farce," Travers enjoyed his greatest popularity during the interwar years, and the good-humored absurdity of his plays is credited as the inspiration for the famous Whitehall farces.

On display will be material from the recently processed Grace Hartigan Papers, as well as from the University Art Collection, the Grove Press Archives, and SCRC's extensive holdings of art and literary magazines from the 1950s. Grace Hartigan (1922*) was a major participant in the explosion of creative energy that was the New York artistic and literary scene of the early 1950s. An important abstract expressionist painter, Hartigan was included in the famous show Twelve Americans at the Museum of Modern Art in 1956. Her friends and correspondents included Frank O'Hara, Larry Rivers, Barbara Guest, and Joan Mitchell.

The exhibition is part of the Syracuse Symposium, which for 2006/2007 has chosen imagination as its theme.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Professional Photographers' Society of Central New York and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, Syracuse Regional Office. This is the second Heart Gallery exhibition in Central New York since 2004. Forty photographers donated their time and talents to create unique portraits of 53 children in foster care that are in need of a family. The Heart Gallery exhibition hopes to find adoptive families for the children participating, as well as to raise awareness around the need for foster and adoptive families here in Central New York and across the state.

Ruff is a professor of architecture at Syracuse University. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Cornell University. He is the recipient of an Alpha Chi Ro Medal for leadership and service. Prior to joining the SU faculty, Ruff taught at Hampton University, the University at Buffalo and Cornell University. Ruff previously worked with the architectural firm of Foit-Albert and Associates.

Ruff formed Ruff Works Studio in 2003. Ruff Works specializes in research and design. One main focus of the studio is the research and cultivation of African-American aesthetics in spatial design. Ruff's publications include an article in Thresholds, "Spatial wRapping: A Speculation on Men's Hip-Hop Fashion," and a book review in the Journal of Architectural Education, "White Papers, Black Marks." He has lectured throughout the United States.

The images in the exhibition, taken mostly in the Syracuse area, are digitally distorted and manipulated to represent the way that people's vision can become altered by outside pressures and influences such as consumerism, religion, government, education, and sports. One of the main themes behind Pinkcombe's work is identity -- he is particularly interested in how outside influences affect who people are. In some photographs he looks at racial identity through images of borders, bridges, and traffic stops, which link communities and also symbolize immigration and emigration. He also creates what he calls "theater images," where the photographs are manipulated and stripped of so much information that they begin to look like film sets or models.

Pinkcombe currently lives in London, England. He attended school at Blackpool College of Lancaster University. Recent exhibition venues include the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in Greenwich and the 921 Gallery in Hackney, Great Britain. Originally trained as a commercial photographer, Pinkcombe shifted to art photography after a prolonged battle with leukemia made him reevaluate his life. He participated in Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program in March 2005. Pinkcombe's residency was sponsored by Autograph: The Association of Black Photographers located in London.

Over 40 visual artists in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts are participating in the annual exhibition highlighting new work by the college's faculty. This year, for the first time, the exhibition has been organized on the theme of challenges chosen, faced, discovered and resolved by this diverse group of image and object makers.

As usual the show brings together a broad diversity of media, technique and inspiration. Visitors will be surprised by the range of objects on display and their breadth and depth of intellectual and emotional content. Traditional themes like portraiture, landscape and still life can be seen next to more experimental genres such as interactive installations and time based arts.

Making this exhibition especially interesting are the visual comparisons between artists working in the same subject area. Several artists are intrigued by landscape but their inspiration springs from sources as different as gardening, the subtle yet real transitions that occur in a landscape and discovering visually interesting fragments of urban settings. Other artists found life experience to inspire them: one used her experiences as a pediatric nurse to shape her imagery while another attempted to portray the music of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis through abstract drawings. Yet another used his family as subjects in a series of photographs that documented the family's travails.

Since Liliana Porter last presented her prints and paintings at Syracuse University (Crossing Boundaries, 1990), this world-renowned Argentinean artist has continued to explore and grow into new dimensions in photography and installation art. Her figurines and toys, her characters, are social, down to earth human creations, made in society's image and likeness.

Born in Uruguay, Ana Tiscornia was a witness-participant of Latin America's recent painful history. Her world is made out of digitalized photography intermingled with maps, fragmented objects, rolled pieces of paper, leftovers -- what we recall are broken sequences, broken at some critical point in our imagery, in our memory.

About the nature of this exhibit, the artists comment: "In order to say where our work intercepts, first we should establish that both artworks are different. While one is more philosophical, related to recurrent questions (Liliana), the other is more political and relates to current events (Ana). While one is dramatic, the other confronts human tragedy with humor. We do not pretend to erase that diversity but to use it as material for the new constructions. What we want is for the fusion of both languages to give birth to a narrative that could be for all intents and purposes fictional and mysterious, where the visual ambiguity opens new ways of interpretation and uncovers unexpected conflicts."

This year, for the first time, the exhibition has been organized on the theme of challenges chosen, faced, discovered and resolved by this diverse group of image and object makers.

As usual the show brings together a broad diversity of media, technique and inspiration. Visitors will be surprised by the range of objects on display and their breadth and depth of intellectual and emotional content. Traditional themes like portraiture, landscape and still life can be seen next to more experimental genres such as interactive installations and time based arts.

Making this exhibition especially interesting are the visual comparisons between artists working in the same subject area. Several artists are intrigued by landscape but their inspiration springs from sources as different as gardening, the subtle yet real transitions that occur in a landscape and discovering visually interesting fragments of urban settings. Other artists found life experience to inspire them: one used her experiences as a pediatric nurse to shape her imagery while another attempted to portray the music of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis through abstract drawings. Yet another used his family as subjects in a series of photographs that documented the family's travails.

Miriam Beerman: Eloquent Pain(t) surveys the intense paintings created by the artist since her 1990 retrospective held at the New Jersey State Museum. Many of Beerman's paintings are inspired by traumatic and agonizing historical events. Since Liliana Porter last presented her prints and paintings at Syracuse University (Crossing Boundaries, 1990), this world-renowned Argentinean artist has continued to explore and grow into new dimensions in photography and installation art. Her figurines and toys, her characters, are social, down to earth human creations, made in society's image and likeness.

Born in Uruguay, Ana Tiscornia was a witness-participant of Latin America's recent painful history. Her world is made out of digitalized photography intermingled with maps, fragmented objects, rolled pieces of paper, leftovers -- what we recall are broken sequences, broken at some critical point in our imagery, in our memory.

About the nature of this exhibit, the artists comment: "In order to say where our work intercepts, first we should establish that both artworks are different. While one is more philosophical, related to recurrent questions (Liliana), the other is more political and relates to current events (Ana). While one is dramatic, the other confronts human tragedy with humor. We do not pretend to erase that diversity but to use it as material for the new constructions. What we want is for the fusion of both languages to give birth to a narrative that could be for all intents and purposes fictional and mysterious, where the visual ambiguity opens new ways of interpretation and uncovers unexpected conflicts."

When Neglected Books Are Revived: The Cases of William Godwin and Dawn Powell

Using William Godwin's 1793 novel Caleb Williams and the novels of the 20th-century American novelist Dawn Powell as test cases, this talk will explore what it means for a book to be lost and to be revived, the different ways that revived books are received in academia and in the general literary culture, and the nature of revivals themselves as cultural phenomena. The talk will close by drawing lessons from these cases for considering "revivals of neglected books."

Nicholas Birns, who has taught literature at Eugene Lang College, The New School, since 1996, is the author of Understanding Anthony Powell, the editor of Antipodes, and the co-editor of Companion to 20th-Century Australian Literature. He has written for European Romantic Review, Southern Quarterly, Arizona Quarterly, Religion and the Arts, and Review of Contemporary Fiction. He has lectured in Sweden, the UK, and Australia. Birns has a Ph.D. in English from New York University.

The talk will take place in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons on the first floor of Bird Library.

Lost Time, with Boots 'n' Shorts

Smooth vocal harmonies and intricate bluegrass instrumentals from one of Central New York's best homegrown bands. Lost Time has been nominated for two Syracuse Area Music Awards, including a nomination for their first CD, "It's About Time," which was released in November of 2002.

The members are all veterans of the Central New York bluegrass scene. Along the way, they've played in some of the region's most respected bluegrass bands, including The Down City Ramblers, Headin' South, Hard Times, Pleasant Valley, Chestnut Grove, and Rosewood.

Don Anderson sings lead and tenor vocals, and holds the band together on acoustic bass. Anderson is also the group's primary songwriter, contributing three originals to the band's CD.

John Burton plays banjo and sings baritone. He is also the default bass singer in the quartets. Burton's first professional job was as Tony Trischka's replacement with the legendary Down City Ramblers in the early '70's, and later was a founding member of Headin' South. Burton has also played in Rosewood and The Lost Boys.

The innovative playing of SAMMY Award winning mandolinist Perry Cleaveland keeps him in demand as a recording session player throughout New York State. For many years he has led the group Rosewood with his wife Caren and has recorded and performs with Chestnut Grove.

Ted Lambert plays rhythm and lead guitar, fiddle, and sings lead and harmony vocals. Lambert is a founding member of Creek Bend and a mainstay in the acoustic music field around the Buffalo, N.Y., area. He also plays banjo, mandolin, and bass.

Rounding out the Lost Time sound is their newest member, three-time Montana State Fiddle Champion Taylor Buckley, who has toured with and co-written tunes with April Verch. His inventive and accurate fiddling complements the versatility of the other musicians.

Boots 'n' Shorts is a new young bluegrass and acoustic jam band on the central NY scene that features fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and vocals. Among their main influences they site: Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Band, David Grisman, and the Grateful Dead. Boots 'n' Shorts will play the opening set.

When Gerald arrives in Rookery Nook, his philandering instincts kick in when he happens upon a pretty young girl dressed only in pink pajamas who has been thrown out of the house next door to his. Hilarity ensues when Gerald struggles to properly outfit the girl and keep her hidden from his sister-in-law, Gertrude, and nosy maid, Mrs. Leverett. Hailed as the "Master of the Farce," Travers enjoyed his greatest popularity during the interwar years, and the good-humored absurdity of his plays is credited as the inspiration for the famous Whitehall farces.

This collection of Expressionist style landscape paintings were executed in India by this Canadian born artist. Matthews' states that his love affair with the art of India began over 15 years ago when he was drawn to the Islamic galleries of the Persian, Moghul and Rajput collections in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since that time he has made three visits to India, culminating in several months of immersion into the culture, flavor and appeal of the people and surroundings. It is apparent that Matthews was overwhelmed by the grand architecture of India, which form the core of this exhibition.

These works on paper are very reminiscent of Indian textiles, and the various techniques used to bleed and run natural pigmented dyes, like batik and block printing. Matthews' spontaneous way of working exemplifies his expressive style and is enhanced by his use of water-based paints on paper. The melding together of the paints with the paper forms a rich surface in these quickly rendered compositions. Each painting epitomizes Matthews' enchantment with India while celebrating the splendor of Indian architecture and textile through his simple color choices, strong outlines, and an energetic use of pattern.

She has recorded with the Berliner Symphoniker (Mozart, Beethoven) and issued the first of a series of recital CDs for VAI in the fall of 2005. Her American performances include venues from La Jolla to New York's Weill Hall. After her official debut in Caracas, playing the
Grieg Piano Concerto at age 11, she began concertizing widely while continuing studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Italy's Accademia Pianistica and Yale University. Her varied interests include contemporary classical music as well as improvisational music, the latter featuring an appearance at New York's famed Blue Note with jazz trumpeter and composer Arturo Sandoval.

Actively involved in 20th century and new music, Ms. Perez has performed works and collaborated with composers such as by Paul Moravec, Suzanne Farrin, Lowell Liebermann, and Alfred Schnittke among others. In 1998, she was awarded the Jose Felix Ribas Prize, highest honor given by the president of Venezuela to a young artist who has contributed to the enhancement of the country.

In the US she studied with Rosalina Sackstein and Ena Bronstein. At the age of 17 she was awarded a full scholarship by the Royal Academy of Music, London, studying with Christopher Elton. After graduating she continued her studies in Italy at the Accademia Pianistica "Incontri Col Maestro" in Imola with pianists Lazar Berman, and Franco Scala. Later on she completed postgraduate studies at Yale University with Hungarian pianist Peter Frankl. Among other musicians who have strongly contributed to her musical growth are Richard Goode, Tamas Vasary, Claude Frank, Boris Berman, Lynn Harrell, Zubin Mehta, Lev Naumov and Dimitri Bashkirov.

Miss Perez performed on the La Jolla Music Society "Discovery" series in San Diego and at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall in New York City ion 2004. Recordings of her performances have recently been featured on various media, including Robert Sherman's Young Artists' Showcase on WQXR-FM in New York City and WFMT in Chicago. Recent performances include recitals in London, Puerto Rico, South America and the 2006 New York International Keyboard Institute and Festival.

Ben Travers' popular 1920s comedy, Rookery Nook, is one of Travers' nine "Aldwych farces." Rookery Nook is set in 1926 and centers on Gerald Popkiss, a recently married playboy who suddenly finds himself traveling alone when his new wife, Clara, is waylaid by her mother's sudden illness. When Gerald arrives in Rookery Nook, his philandering instincts kick in when he happens upon a pretty young girl dressed only in pink pajamas who has been thrown out of the house next door to his. Hilarity ensues when Gerald struggles to properly outfit the girl and keep her hidden from his sister-in-law, Gertrude, and nosy maid, Mrs. Leverett. Hailed as the "Master of the Farce," Travers enjoyed his greatest popularity during the interwar years, and the good-humored absurdity of his plays is credited as the inspiration for the famous Whitehall farces.
