Three Generations on the Canal
Erie Canal Museum

Price: Free
Erie Canal Museum
318 Erie Blvd. E., Syracuse

Three Generations on the Canal explores, through restored photographs, the relationship of one family—the Grahams—to the New York State Barge Canal over three generations. "Toot-Toot" Graham was a tug boat captain on the Barge Canal in the 1950s. For him, the canal was his workplace. The next generation of Grahams pioneered the recreational possibilities of the Canal on a small cabin cruiser named the Ro-mar. In those days there were not many accommodations for a pleasure craft. Fuel was purchased at gas stations in the towns along the canal and hand carried to the boat in cans. The current generation of Grahams travels the full length of the recreationally-oriented canal in rented boats.

During the height of Maxfield Parrish's popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, he was the most reproduced American artist of his era. Disseminated through magazine covers, book illustrations, calendar pads, advertisements, and color reproductions, Parrish's images occupied a ubiquitous presence in popular visual culture. While recent exhibitions of Parrish have focused mainly on his original oil paintings, Fantasies and Fairy-Tales represents the first comprehensive sampling of Parrish's work in a variety of printed media.

"Syracuse's 15th Ward and Beyond," a documentary capturing the memories of former residents of Syracuse's 15th Ward and other Syracuse neighborhoods, was born from a bus tour of old Syracuse last fall sponsored by Syracuse University's South Side Initiative Office and the local Black History Preservation team. The tour went through the former 15th Ward and visited other historical sites, including the Ebony Market, Croton Elementary, Old Dunbar, The Glass Bottom and Open Door Lounges, Ben's Kitchen, the Father Brady Center for Black Catholics, and Washington Irving Elementary School.

Some 30 senior members of the community, who have lived in Syracuse for at least 40 years, participated. The tour and the participants' stories and recollections of Syracuse's past were captured by local filmmaker Courtney Rile.

Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company
Sonita L. Surratt, director

Price: $20 regular; $15 students/seniors
CFAC Black Box Theater
805 E. Genesee St., Syracuse

"You can catch more flies with molasses than you do with vinegar." Join us for a visit with Sadie and Bessie, the indomitable Delany sisters whose poignant and irreverent outlook on a transforming American landscape offers a life-affirming testament to legacy and hope. Having Our Say, the Delany Sisters' First 100 Years was adapted by multi-award-winning playwright Emily Mann from the best-selling book by Sarah and A. Elizabeth Delany with Amy Hill Hearth. Having Our Say received three Tony nominations in 1995 and has since been produced internationally to critical acclaim.

Having Our Say opens as 103-year-old Sadie and 101-year-old Bessie Delany, portrayed by veteran actors Annette Adams-Brown and Karin Franklin King, welcome us into their home in Mount Vernon, NY. We, the audience, are guests in their home as the sisters prepare dinner in remembrance of their father's birthday. They recount a fascinating series of events and anecdotes drawn from a century of family history and their careers as pioneering African American professional women in a racially divided society. This wonderfully inviting dramatic story is about the struggles of women in a male-dominated society; of a family working together building a good life, as they serve others as good neighbors and set examples for the younger members of their family.

Every Woman Here: Remnants of Seneca (1982-2006)
ArtRage Gallery

Price: $5 suggested donation

505 Hawley Ave., Syracuse

The Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace and Justice was an all-women's community of protest and challenge to violence and militarism housed on 52 acres bordering the Seneca Army Depot in upstate New York. Commonly known as the Seneca Women's Peace Camp or Seneca, the encampment was modeled after the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in England (1981-2000) where hundreds of British sisters were creating nonviolent protest in the face of the scheduled deployment of U.S. Cruise missiles.

In the summer of 1983, 12,000 women from around the world participated in nonviolence trainings, direct actions, and civil disobedience at Seneca resulting in 950 arrests. In 1994 the encampment transitioned into Women's PeaceLand, an intentional community whose purpose was to promote and implement the principles of peace, nonviolence and anti-oppression. This is their story.

Jazz virtuoso Michael Kaeshammer has been called a Canadian triple-threat, and an artist whose entertaining high-energy style is a combination of piano virtuosity, vocal ability, and major on-stage charisma. And that potent combination has earned the Toronto-based artist international critical acclaim and a loyal and growing fan base, not to mention a just-announced Juno Award nomination for "Vocal Jazz Album of the Year" along with fellow category nominees Canadian superstars Diana Krall and Michael Buble.

Michael Kaeshammer's performances are pure delight and his energy knows no bounds. He has piano technique to burn and, to the audience's delight, has an acrobatic way with a grand piano. When Kaeshammer performs, it's obvious he's having a ball, playing superlative boogie-woogie, blues, jazz, and pop cross-over material, drawn mostly from his impressive catalog of studio recordings.

Natalie Cole

Price: Free
Jazz Fest Main Stage (Jamesville Beach)
Jamesville Beach Park, Jamesville

When Natalie Cole's seminal "Unforgettable...With Love" came out in 1991, the jazz collection set a new standard for reinventing the Great American Songbook. The CD, which captured 6 Grammys, including Album and Record of The Year, spent five weeks at No. 1 and sold more than 8 million copies in the U.S. alone. Yet instead of exploiting the moment and rushing out a second volume, Cole thoughtfully took a step back, devoted herself to several other projects including her riveting autobiography, and waited until she felt ready to return to the songs that fulfill her heart and soul.

Natalie released her follow up "Still Unforgettable" in 2009, and the album won two Grammys, one for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and one for Best Instrumental Accompanying Vocalist. It also earned Cole an NAACP Award for Best Jazz Artist.

The 9-time Grammy winner continues to astonish with her vocal dexterity and her intimate, knowing way with a lyric and a melody. Those talents will be on display as Cole continues to tour to promote Still Unforgettable: "I still love recording and still love the stage, but like my dad, I have the most fun when Im in front of that glorious orchestra or that kick-butt big band."

Price: Free
