Three Generations on the Canal
Erie Canal Museum

Price: Free
Erie Canal Museum
318 Erie Blvd. E., Syracuse

Three Generations on the Canal explores, through restored photographs, the relationship of one family—the Grahams—to the New York State Barge Canal over three generations. "Toot-Toot" Graham was a tug boat captain on the Barge Canal in the 1950s. For him, the canal was his workplace. The next generation of Grahams pioneered the recreational possibilities of the Canal on a small cabin cruiser named the Ro-mar. In those days there were not many accommodations for a pleasure craft. Fuel was purchased at gas stations in the towns along the canal and hand carried to the boat in cans. The current generation of Grahams travels the full length of the recreationally-oriented canal in rented boats.

elegy: society for a dead society
Redhouse

Former Redhouse Theater
219 S. West St., Syracuse

Drawn from details of the death of a former friend and bandmate of artist Paul Lloyd Sargent, "elegy" is presented through a multimedia installation of mashed-up, remixed, and recontextualized historical ephemera collected from mixtapes, amateur videos, zines, photographs, band fliers, sketchbook pages, song lyrics, and more. A lament for the death of youth despite the overwhelming persistence of youth culture, "elegy: society for a dead society" paints nostalgia and cynicism as two shades within the same dark palette.

Paul Lloyd Sargent splits his time between Brooklyn and Wellesley Island, NY. He was raised in Syracuse and graduated from Nottingham High School in 1989 and Hamilton College in 1993. After stints in Las Vegas, Boston, and Venice Beach, in 2000, he received his MFA in video from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Everson Museum of Art

Everson Museum of Art

During the height of Maxfield Parrish's popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, he was the most reproduced American artist of his era. Disseminated through magazine covers, book illustrations, calendar pads, advertisements, and color reproductions, Parrish's images occupied a ubiquitous presence in popular visual culture. While recent exhibitions of Parrish have focused mainly on his original oil paintings, Fantasies and Fairy-Tales represents the first comprehensive sampling of Parrish's work in a variety of printed media.

The Life and Work of Maxfield Parrish
Everson Museum of Art
Featuring Coy Ludwig

Price: Free
Hosmer Auditorium, Everson Museum
401 Harrison St., Syracuse

Coy Ludwig will present an illustrated talk addressing both Maxfield Parrish's early years in Philadelphia and his later highly-productive life in the artists' colony of Cornish, NH. The presentation will include many examples of Parrish's work from all phases of his long and successful career. Following Parrish's death in 1966, his children selected and authorized Syracuse resident Coy Ludwig to write the first book about their father and his work. The family gave Ludwig unlimited access to the artist's papers, archives, and vast photographic library. The resulting book, Maxfield Parrish, published in 1973, helped to create a resurgence of interest in the late artist's work.

This program is co-sponsored by the Arts & Crafts Society of Central New York.

Gasland

Price: $7
Palace Theater
2384 James St., Syracuse

When filmmaker Josh Fox discovers that Natural Gas drilling is coming to his area -- the Catskillls/Poconos region of Upstate New York and Pennsylvania -- he sets off on a 24-state journey to uncover the deep consequences of the United States' natural gas drilling boom. What he uncovers is truly shocking: water that can be lit on fire right out of the sink, chronically ill residents of drilling areas from disparate locations in the US all with the same mysterious symptoms, huge pools of toxic waste that kill cattle and vegetation, well blowouts and huge gas explosions consistently covered up by state and federal regulatory agencies. These are just a few of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called Gasland.

And it's not even lunchtime yet. She lives in Cicero with her husband, aforementioned teenagers, and assorted pets.

Susannah M. Loiselle (fiction) lives with her family near rural Locke, NY. She is a retired school librarian and has taken many writing and art classes at Wells College.
